10,000 Opportunities

More than 300,000 young adults from around the world come to New Zealand as backpackers, tourists, and seasonal workers. Located on the North Island, Tauranga is the fifth largest city in the country and welcomes over 10,000 of these travelers per month! For many, this journey is not only about the physical journey, but also spiritual discovery.

“(The young adults are) drawn by our isolation, beauty and friendly reputation.  They come on a journey – both physical and spiritual.  For many, their motivation for leaving their home country is to experience new things and to find meaning for their life. They are therefore open to spiritual things – they want to wrestle with the concept of a God.” – Bryce Gilmor, Steiger NZ Leader

With such a large volume of people coming through the city, one of the biggest needs is a safe and comfortable place to sleep. One of the main ways that Steiger reaches this constant flow of visitors is by hosting people in their community house, The Wharf. Located in the busy heart of Tauranga, The Wharf has four bedrooms that are used to host travelers and full-time Steiger staff. In addition to sharing God’s love through hospitality, the community also has created opportunities to share the Gospel through weekly community meals, clothing swaps, Open Mic nights, concerts, and informal Bible Studies.
