“There is a Jesus Movement happening right now in New Zealand!”

These were some recent words of excitement we heard from a friend of ours living in Wellington, New Zealand. For her, it is obvious that God has his eyes on this country and is moving in power with his love. This is a huge encouragement for us as we continue forward towards our next step in ministry: Pioneering a new Steiger City Team in Wellington!

As many of you already know, during the past 6 months we have been preparing for our move down to Wellington. This has included many hours of prayer, multiple visits, and frequent strategy meetings. Each of our visits have been spent meeting and praying with local church pastors, ministry leaders, and university chaplains. Overwhelmingly, we have been told that there is a big need for a ministry like Steiger to have a presence in the city. While incredible things are happening through these churches and ministries, there is a noticeable void in the areas of evangelism and training young people to share their faith with their peers.

Why Wellington?
As Steiger’s ministry have grown and developed in Tauranga, we have known that the time was coming where God would call us to multiply. Looking at the country as a whole, four cities have stood out as potential places for Steiger to have new City Teams: Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, and Christchurch. As we’ve prayed together as a team, we believe that God is now opening the door to Wellington! In addition to being the capitol of New Zealand, Wellington is incredibly influential in the areas of politics, art, and education.

What will you do?

One fact about Wellington that gets us particularly excited is that people between the ages of 18-34 make up 31% of the population, with people between the ages of 20-24 making up the single largest age group in Wellington! This fits so perfectly with our vision and opens up the doors for so many opportunities to share the Gospel as we pioneer this new work.
Through our frequent visits and outreaches in Wellington over this past year, we have discovered three key areas where we would like to begin our ministry. First, we see the incredible potential to reach and disciple people in intentional community houses. We have already begun talking to the owners of a potential house and have been approached by a few people interested in participating in the community! Second, there is a huge need for the Gospel and interactions with God’s love in the local universities. Sitting down with some of the local chaplains, we have heard story after story of students affected by depression and suicide. The doors have already begun to open for us to find creative and relevant ways to reach this hungry demographic!

And third, we see incredible potential to reach Wellington’s youth culture through street evangelism. While the city itself is busy with activity, it is also very pedestrian friendly. During some of our longer visits we even recognized and greeted people that we had begun to see regularly as we walked to our different stops in the area! One specific tool that we are excited have as a part of our regular ministry are street interviews. Having already participated in these in Tauranga, we see this way of interacting as a wonderful opportunity to not only share the Gospel but to also get to know the local youth culture.

What do you need?

We currently have two big needs as we prepare to move to Wellington at the end of September:

1. To reach our Wellington budget we need to increase our monthly support by $1,500USD ($2,300NZD).
2. We are looking for a place to live! Our desire is to find a house to rent in the Newtown neighborhood that can serve as both a hub for hospitality and ministry.

We hope that this update has found you well. We are excited for this new season in our lives and ministry!

As with everything we have done in our past 15 years serving with Steiger, we know that we can’t do this alone. If you are not already partnering with us, we would love to have join us in this new big step of faith. Please prayerfully consider partnering with us through regular prayer and financial support.

Thank you for all of your love, encouragement, and support. God is good!

End Of 2018 UPDATE

End Of 2018 UPDATE

Aotearoa, or Long White Cloud, is the Māori name used for New Zealand. This name describes what the original voyagers saw as they approached the country’s North Island. For the three of us, while initially unexpected, our journey to New Zealand has also been one of discovery, adventure, and transformation. In December we celebrated our family’s one year anniversary of living and serving God in this wonderful country. We have been so blessed by God’s power, faithfulness, and love during this incredible season!

Please read on as we share some ministry highlights, what Moira has been up to, and how you can partner with our work here in Aotearoa!

Local Ministry Highlight: Open Mic Night Events
The Outdoor Open Mic Nights held at The Strand in Tauranga draw a huge crowd!

Tauranga is filled with creative people! One of the ways that we interact with this community is to host Open Mic Nights. Noah has been leading this ministry for almost a year. During these events our team gives people the opportunity to share a song, a spoken word poem, a story, or even a joke. In addition to providing a platform for young people to show their talent, these events also give us the opportunity to develop relationships and share about God’s love for them!

We currently have two types of Open Mic Nights. Once a month during the NZ Spring/Summer (October – April) we bring the event outdoors and build a stage along the waterfront downtown. These Open Mics easily attract 100+ people and have become part of the rhythm of the city. The city of Tauranga even helps us get the word out by promoting these events online! Every month we are able to connect with many local and international young people and invite them to attend our other regular events, such as our weekly Community Potlucks.

Our indoor Open Mic Nights at The Barrel Room create a more intimate setting.

Twice a month we also put on Open Mics at a local downtown bar/restaurant, The Barrel Room. While smaller in size, these events allow us to connect with the local Open Mic Night scene and continue to provide opportunities for local and international young people to have a voice. Recently we had a young backpacker come in to see the Open Mic since she had heard the music from outside. Once inside we invited her to sit down, enjoy some food, and listen to the songs people were performing. After some time together, she shared that she needed a place to stay. We immediately invited her to stay with us upstairs at The Wharf Community House! She said “Yes,” and we were able to host her for a few days, share the Gospel with her, and bless her as she continued on her journey through New Zealand! Many of us have kept in contact with her over Social Media, and we are hoping to see her again in the future. This is just one story of the many people who have been significantly impacted with our Open Mic Night Events!

Steiger International Gathering 2018
The Steiger Gathering was attended by missionaries and ministry partners from over 15 countries from around the world!

As you may know, we had the blessed opportunity to visit Europe and attend the Steiger International Gathering at the International Center in Krögis, Germany in October/November! During our time at The Gathering we attended incredible workshops about many amazing topics, such as working through conflict in a cross-cultural context, healthy boundaries in ministry, and managing tension. These proved to be valuable resources for as we continue in our new season of international ministry in New Zealand.

We also had the time and ability to have fellowship with some close friends and fellow ministers from Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, and England. It was so wonderful to reconnect, share about God’s faithfulness in each of our works around the world, and encourage each other in what lies ahead in 2019. The value of this time was definitely heightened by the fact that we now live on the opposite side of the world!

We enjoyed an impromptu SMS 2016 reunion!

A part of our time in Europe that was especially important was the ability to connect with some old classmate friends that work at All Nations Bible College in England where Noah studied for his Masters Degree in Leadership with Mission. With many students looking to move directly into missions after graduation, it was wonderful to share about the opportunities currently available with Steiger around the world!

Moira Makes Friends Everywhere She Goes!
Moira with one of the wonderful volunteers at the Steiger Gathering in Krögis, Germany

Not a day goes by where we are not surprised and blessed by Moira! She is the truest example of courage, compassion, curiosity, and boundless energy. During our time in Europe we were so amazed and encouraged by her love for others, her desire to learn from everyone around her, and her ability to live in an incredible variety of environments and cultures. She is turning out to be very international!

As we have reached the midpoint of Moira being 4 years old (Christmas is her half birthday), we are enjoying her last months in pre-school here in Tauranga. When she turns 5 she will move forward to Primary School. While she loves her teachers and friends at the “Kindy”, Moira is actively looking forward to what is next. She has a seeming unending passion for life and the hope for what is tomorrow … especially if it is a play-date with a friend or a sleep-over!

Moira at her natural pace of life and at the rare state of stillness. We love her passion!

We hope that this update has found you well. God was incredibly faithful in 2018! We look forward to the work the Lord has for us as we pray about 2019 and what this year has to offer. God never rests!

VIDEO UPDATES!

Our past nine months working with Steiger International in Tauranga, New Zealand have been full and exciting! Time and time again we have experienced God’s faithfulness, power, and love for those who don’t know Him. Watch the video above for an in-depth update of what we have been up to! (Please do not share this video as it contains sensitive information.)

STEIGER GATHERING 2018
We have also been invited to attend the Steiger International Gathering in October. This will take place where we used to live and work at the International Center in Krögis, Germany. Check out the above video learn more about this exciting event and to find out how you can partner with us!
Kia Kaha: April – May Update

Kia Kaha: April – May Update

In Māori, New Zealand’s native language, Kia Kaha means “be strong.” For the past few months this has been one of the things we say to Moira as she goes to bed. “When you have a bad dream or feel scared at night, Kia Kaha. Be strong because God is with you.”

As we continue to adjust to our life and ministry in New Zealand, this been an encouragement to our family as a whole. While we have seen some similarities to America and from our year of living in the UK, every day is still an opportunity to discover new ways of doing life, relating to others, and being culturally relevant. God continues to remind us that, while we may face humbling challenges and frequent times of learning new ways to live life, He is at work around us and is with us. Kia Kaha!

Local Ministry Highlight: Informal Bible Studies

The Leavers Bible Study Team (L to R: Zane, Caleb, and Wendy)

As soon as we arrived in NZ, I (Wendy) had the opportunity to be a part of leading a new Bible study. There had already been some discussion about a group of friends getting together to talk about the Bible and Christian perspectives on different topics. In NZ, people who have graduated from high school are called “Leavers” and high school is called “college” … just in case you weren’t confused already. Our group is 17-20 year olds who are working and studying.

We have been meeting for the last six months, going through the book of Luke and addressing various other topics of interest. We have a couple of Christians who take turns being facilitators, but everyone else is a mixture of atheists, agnostics, and those just interested in the Christian faith. The diversity of the group has led to an array of topics and interests. Some questions that have been raised are:

  • If God wants us to go to heaven, why did he make it impossible to live without sin?
  • Do people need God to make the right choices in life?

Other topics we’ve discussed are free will, homosexuality, gender, the definition of sin, the kingdom of God, heaven, hell, and evolution. The most amazing thing about these topics and questions is that they are coming from sincere curiosity and a profound seeking. The labels and agenda people have given themselves for the sake of identity and explaining their ideologies are not a big enough wall for the power of the Holy Spirit to disassemble.

We are seeing something happen in small and significant ways. Sometimes it’s a comment or moment of vulnerability. Many of the people in the group have never read the Bible, but over time truth is sinking in. When we were studying the Christmas story in Luke 2 our facilitator asked, “Why was the birth of Jesus first announced to the shepherds?” An atheist in our group replied, “It’s because of the upside-down kingdom! The birth of Jesus as King should be told to the lowest of society first and not the richest and most powerful!”

Please pray for those coming to the Bible study. Pray that God would speak to them, and they would surrender their lives to Jesus. Pray for our facilitators – that they would grow in boldness and truth as they share with honesty and authenticity.

We have once again been invited to attend the annual Steiger Gathering in Germany. This is a time set aside for missionary training, fellowship, and vision casting for the next year. While we were living and working with Steiger in Krögis this was an incredibly important time for our development as missionaries and staying connected with the greater work that is happening around the world.

This October will mark two years since we moved away from Germany. In addition to the value of connecting with other Steiger workers from around the world, this will also be an opportunity to reconnect with the local church that has supported us in ministry, the wonderful friends we made, and Moira’s friends from when she was a toddler. Please prayerfully consider supporting us with your prayers and finances as we begin to raise the extra support needed for this trip! We need to raise $6000 USD for this trip.

Never Stop Never Stopping!

Not a day goes by when we are not encouraged and blessed by Moira’s passion for life, sense of humor, and incredible love for people. It seems that whenever we turn around she is either running off for a new adventure outside, singing a Maori song she learned at preschool, or talking about which friends she wants to invite over next for a sleep over. There’s never a dull moment with Moira!

One specific topic of conversation that has been coming up frequently is her upcoming birthday. Moira will be turning 4 on June 25th! This is the first year when she not only knows what a birthday is, but is also counting down the days till its arrival. So far, the theme for the her party will settle somewhere in the realm of butterflies, princesses, dancers, and rock & roll.

House To Home: February – March Update

House To Home: February – March Update

What a difference a couple months can make! Since arriving in Tauranga, NZ in December we have seen the Lord move in our life in such amazing ways. In addition to finding a wonderful car that perfectly suits our family’s needs, we also found a new house! It is incredible the ways that the Lord has answered our prayers, even some of the more hopeful and unique requests. Some of the special “gifts” that have come with this home are a large beautiful yard for Moira to play in, extra space to host friends and backpackers, and a landlord that understands and supports our vision for ministry. God is so good!

While a good amount of our time has been spent settling into our home, the Lord has also presented us with many opportunities for ministry. In January Wendy was asked by a young woman volunteering at our backpacker ministry, The Wharf, to be baptized. The baptism took place in the Pacific Ocean and was a beautiful moment of public declaration of her love for God! In early February we were invited to teach at a discipleship school in Wellington called “Welcome Home.” This school is led by some dear friends of ours and was filled with wonderful students hungry to explore the deeper reality of following God.

Towards the end of the month Noah had the opportunity to both preach at a local church on “Being Called” and to help lead one of our monthly Open Mic Nights. (If you would like to watch the sermon, click HERE.) This event took place outdoors in a busy spot in Tauranga’s City Center and was attended by more than 130 locals and international backpackers. The goal of the Open Mic Night is to not only give people the opportunity to share their talent, but to also connect with them personally and share the love of Jesus. It was a wonderful evening! To see more photos and videos of the event, visit The Wharf’s Facebook page by clicking HERE.

Moira’s New Adventure!

Moira has started Preschool! One of our prayer requests when we knew we would be moving to New Zealand was for God to lead us to the right Kindy (New Zealand name for Preschool) for Moira. We have been so blessed to find a Preschool that we not only like, but one that is only a 10 minute walk from our home!

Since day one, Moira has loved her experience in Kindy. She has already made some great friends, is developing her social skills, and is discovering new things about the New Zealand culture. Here she gets to learn how to use new tools, practice her Maori (the native language), and go on little adventures in the area. A few days ago she told us that she was able to play with a shark! A little surprised and confused, we asked her teachers the next day what Moira may have been talking about. Sure enough, they had not only brought a recently deceased small shark to class, but also dissected it so the kids could learn how bodies work. Wow! We don’t remember doing that in our Preschools!

We hope that this update has found you well. As always, to find out more of what we are doing with our life and ministry in New Zealand please check out our social media links at the bottom of this newsletter.

Merry Christmas From Aotearoa!

Merry Christmas From Aotearoa!

Greetings from New Zealand or Aotearoa, “the land of the long white cloud.” After a long day of travel we arrived in our new home of Tauranga on December 8th! In addition to getting used to hearing the Kiwi accent wherever we go, we have had to adjust to one more major change: Celebrating Christmas during the summer! While we do genuinely miss the snow, I think we could get used to this …

Our first couple of weeks have been pretty eventful. Since arriving we have been working to get our bearings in regards to where things are in the city, spending time with the local Steiger team, and beginning to make a life here in Tauranga. A lot of our initial work has been pretty practical, like joining a bank, getting new phone numbers, buying a car, and finding a house to rent.

Things have been going great, so far, and we are beginning to feel more settled and familiar with our surroundings. One of the greatest things that has happened has been that Moira has friends she can play with every day! While we look for a new home, we have been blessed to stay in a flat below a fellow Steiger Missionary family with 5 kids. They have been so hospitable to us and aided in Moira feeling like this really is her new home.

We hope that this little update has found you well and that you have a wonderful Christmas season. Thank you for all of your love and support during this time of transition!

Much love,
~ Noah, Wendy, and Moira Schneider

Here We Go … Are You Coming?

Here We Go … Are You Coming?

Your read right! After 9 months of prayer, preparation, and meeting with present and future Ministry Partners we are now on our way to New Zealand.

https://gallery.mailchimp.com/bdd464dcbba3ee317ef1f0eca/images/7ec91f53-b18d-45f1-b8e7-7a94d0894460.jpgOn Thursday, December 7th, we will pack our bags and fly out to our new home in Tauranga. For those who don’t know, the city of Tauranga is located in the Bay of Plenty on the North Island. Here we will continue our ministry work with Steiger International.

Are You Coming?

We know that we are not meant to serve alone as missionaries in New Zealand. Community is an incredibly important part of our vision for ministry! As we’ve prepared for our move, we have taken steps to develop and grow our circle of Ministry Partners. These are the people committed to praying for us, encouraging us, and supporting us with their finances as we serve the Lord wherever He calls us to go. This community is an intimate part of everything we do!

So far, during our season in the States, we have been able to raise our “Launch Fund” and our “Go Budget.” These have enabled us to take the big first steps of moving to Tauranga and beginning our full-time ministry work. Our next step will be to raise our “Stay Budget.” Just like it says, this budget will allow us to continue our work in New Zealand long-term.

We would love for you to join us as a Ministry Partner! To “come with us,” please click HERE.

Thank you for all of your love and support during this season of preparation!
